I asked Matt how do you feel about the way independent music is going
with bands selling their own CD’s on line, podcasters playing your
music, and radio stations still playing the same old bands?
Matt - I think we are really fortunate to be living in a time where
you can reach people all over the world through the internet. We also
have had and continue to have tons of podcasters picking up our music
too. It’s great and it’s really gratifying to see people you don’t
even know taking an interest in your music. We have sold CDs all over
the world through CDbaby.com and iTunes. (yes, Megaphone is on
iTunes). The downside I think is that there is so many places for new
independent music that it can be overwhelming for both the artist and
the listener. There are so many sites popping up every day. It’s hard
to dominate when every one is fighting for your attention ya know.
It’s easy as an artist to get caught up in creating all of the web
pages on all of these sites and having to maintain them and promote
them. It can take a lot of time. When I’m keeping up with all these
websites, I ignore my writing. So then I get back to writing and then
the websites get ignored. Ultimately, it’s another great vehicle to
get your band out there. But the same fact remains, you got to be in
the right place at the right time. The internet has just given us more
places. I can’t say anything bad about the radio stations. They do
what they have to do. In fact here in Orlando, both of the two big
rock stations dedicate programming time every single week to local
artists. And if your good and you build a relationship with them,
they’ll play you pretty regularly. We can usually count on one or both
to play us the week of a local show. Over the years, each of these
stations have added a few locals to regular rotation. Though that
hasn’t happened for Megaphone, YET!
That’s great that the two big rock stations have programs of local
artists in Orlando, my hats off to them. If you live in the Orlando
area, or where ever you live call your radio stations and request
Megaphone be played. Put your radio stations number in your cell phone
so when ever your waiting in line at the store, drive threw line,
waiting at the doctors office, or just sitting around, be a megaphone
for Megaphone.

Matt what can your fans do help Megaphone break out of Florida?
Matt - Tell your friends. Word of mouth is the biggest and best
advertisement in the world. It’s someone you know and trust telling
you hey I know something you’ll like. Tell people you know to find
us on myspace. Check out our website. every-time you come to a
megaphone show bring someone that you haven’t brought before. Tell
people to download our new single “the perfect gift”. When a bands
myspace numbers start to jump quickly and people start packing every
show you play, and you start to really sell tons of your own CDs or
even better yet downloads, people take notice. People start to think
“Hey, there’s something really going on here.” So please, if you love
megaphone or even if you just like us a little bit, tell your friends
and tell your friends to tell their friends.
Don’t forget the cd “for cryin’ out loud” and their Christmas song
“The Perfect Gift ” it’s only at their website and MySpace. This
should be a collectors item sense it will only be available for a
limited time.

Here are some questions I ask Matt Bloodwell (Voice, Guitar & Song
Writer) about Megaphone.
How do you describe your music?
Matt - I like to describe our music as honest, loud,
stick-to-the-side-of-your-head, guitar rock. We aren’t trying to be
what’s hot at the moment, It’s strait forward rock. We write the kind
of music we like to listen to. To me a good song is one that when it’s
over you want to hear it again. That’s what I mean by stick to the
side or your head. Writing songs is like a puzzle. I try to craft each
song so they keep playing in your head long after they’ve ended. Oh
yeah and it’s got to ROCK!
Could you tell us how a few of these songs came about?
Matt - You know all of these songs come from simple ideas, like a
chord progression and a melody over it. I have this little hand held
digital recorder I have with me all the time. Most people use them for
lectures and stuff, but I use mine for song ideas. No mater where I
am, I get an idea, I just sing it in to this thing. I’ll take the best
ideas and work em till they sound right. Some songs happen really
quickly. For instance Wasted, I finished all the music and the
arrangement in one night. Other songs seem to take forever and go
through all kinds of changes. What’s her name actually started out as
a ballad.
There will me more with Matt on the Friday and Saturday post.
You should take the time to go by their MySpace and their website.
They have one of the best looking, band website I’ve seen, good
information about the band, really great photos and best of all you
can get their awesome cd “for cryin’ out loud”. Oh lets not forget
their Christmas song “The Perfect Gift ” it’s only at their
website
and
MySpace and not on any cd so get it wile it is available. This is what Matt had to say about “The Perfect Gift ”
It’s a ballad. We don’t do many ballads, but since it’s a Christmas
song I think it really works. I actually wrote it as a gift for my
fiancee for Christmas last year. I played it for some close friends
and they suggested that we release it.
Personally, I love the song. It was honestly inspired and it was
written really quickly and easily. I hope it connects with people.
It’s very different from most Megaphone stuff, but it’s also similar
in the sense that it still is really catchy and easy to relate to.
Come on what are you waiting for it’s only $0.99 you’ll spend more
than that on a gallon of gas and this will last you much longer. Wile
your at it pick up their cd and give it as a Christmas gift (or as a
gift to your self, you deserve it).
Megaphone keeps on rock n’ mile after mile.
