John Hughes on the street – Photo by Chris Smith This is part of the interview I did with John Hughes.
Q: What were some of the bands that inspired you to get into music?
John: In the sixites when I was in elementary school, I was listening to alot of pop/bubble gum stuff. You know, stuff like “Ohio Express”, “1910 Fruitgum Company”, “Herman’s Hermits”, whatever. There was always hope that someone in the family would get the latest “Monkee” album for Christmas. However, I’m going to guess that things took a turn around 1969 when I got a K-tel record for Christmas and heard “Cinnamon Girl” for the first time…WoW! Those crunchy guitar chords and the sweet harmonies between Danny Whitten and Neil Young. That was it for me. I was hooked on rock music. Playing guitar never really entered my mind back then, however. I’m not really certain why, but as far back as I can recall, I wanted to play drums. Once I started to do that, I forgot about the bubble gum/am radio hits and focused on stuff like Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple, Doobie Brothers, C.C.R. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin The Band etc. You’ll be interested to know that I never listened to a lot of Tom Petty. He always did get an enormous amount of radio airplay around here , however. I have two live concert DVD’s that I love and I’ve seen him and the heartbreakers in concert only once. Was a great show.Q: What do you listen to now?
John: Not much, some kid stole my I-pod with over 6000 songs in it last week…..LOL. Wish I was kidding about that, but, it’s true. Regardless, I like a lot of stuff. I still listen to Grand Funk, just to hear Mark Farner sing. When I was a kid, I was listening to GFR so I could hear Don Brewer play drums. He was my hero back then. Man, I think Farner was the most soulful sounding white rock singer of all time. Having said all of that, I listen to a lot of Blue Oyster Cult’s more recent albums. The one’s people don’t know exist and happen to be some of their best work. Those guys are America’s best kept secret as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been listening to Wide Spread Panic. I love those guys. I love the Bon Scott AC/DC stuff. This week, I’ve been getting up and putting Neil’s “Ordinary People” song on from his latest album, “Chrome Dreams 2″. It’s a great song, and you can start the song, shave, shower, get dressed, and the song is still playing, so you don’t have to mess with what you want to hear next while in a rush to get out the door. : ) I picked up this Donovan Frankenreiter album in a shop in Florida a couple of weeks ago.I had some great guys in Nashville playing with me on this and my producer, Joe Hardy, he pulled the whole thing together for me. I can’t thank him enough. I was frustrated after trying to get this project done for about 2 years. After I met Joe, it came together quickly. I’m going to need to find a band soon to go out and do these tunes with. Overall, I just want folks to hear it. I love hearing from them, love to hear and read their comments. It’s interesting.Songs played on the podcast were all from John’s new cd “Time”1. Company Town
2. Panic Mechanic
3. Runaway
4. Ginned Up

Conclusion of the interview with Rebecca from Laws Of Gravity.
Q: Could you tell us something about these songs in the podcast.
Rebecca: Tanpura: Mike just felt like writing something really
aggressive at the time, tapping into some of his hardcore roots. I was
drawing from some of my own personal experiences, and wrote lyrics
about that. When we were in the studio doing the final mastering, Mike
had this Indian meditation cd that we thought would be pretty cool as
the intro, and so we ended up adding that in.
Rebecca: Sunday: This was a song that I had written with a friend of
mine in London. It was originally an electronic /ambient track. Mike
had asked me if I might want to make one of my songs heavy, and I gave
him a batch of tunes, including that one to work with. By the next
rehearsal, he had turned it into an awesome Laws Of Gravity tune,
taking the basic theme of the song, plus adding some new parts that
would compliment the original tune.
Rebecca: On Your Knees: Mike was in the mood to write something slow
and dark, and I just fed off of that, and came up with the lyrics. We
are both really inspired by Middle-Eastern music, thanks to our
influences by Led Zeppelin and Soundgarden. Mike especially loves that
style, thanks to all the Indian restaurants he eats in. That helped us
to come up with the idea for the middle section of the tune.
Is their anything I missed you would like to add ?
We really appreciate everyone who has supported us. Thanks to Mark and
A1 Artist Spotlight for digging our music and featuring us on this
podcast. We really enjoy performing live, so if we’re playing in your
area, we’d love for you to come down and check out our live set. You

Check out this podcast I just found “Blues In The Night”. One great hour of blues and blues rock each week. I’ve only heard about four shows (4 hours) so far and have not heard one bad song yet. This show is going to be a great resource for me to find us new spotlight artist. James McGee is the host and does a very good job. James does not waste your time with unnecessary talk, his show is about the music and it shows because you get a lot of it. Click here for Blues In The Night website.

I said to Rebecca: You have a nice looking video of “Still Be Down”
How did that come about?
Rebecca: Well, we have a very talented friend that is great with video
work and offered to hook us up with some time. The original idea was
to do something at this sculpture park in Queens. But we stumbled upon
this old factory. Mike, our guitar player peeked inside, and after
realizing it was abandoned… It was a great location thanks to the
burnt-out taxis, piles of car tires, and hundreds of pigeons flying
everywhere. We shot the video on Easter Sunday with one camera, a boom
box, and all natural lighting. It really worked out well.
Q: How does the song writing work out, the songs seem pretty intricate
for just one person?
Rebecca: They usually start with Mike coming up with some ideas on the
guitar, and then he’ll work on incorporating the bass and drums and
getting the basic song structure together. Meanwhile, I’ll be writing
lyrics and melody parts over the music. We all give feedback to each
other and usually we get the songs together in one rehearsal session.
Q: There is a photo of Bruce Willis on you MySpace page, what was the
reason for that?
Rebecca: Well, Mike and Harry were on tour in Europe playing with the
punk/hardcore band Breakdown. On the first day of tour, they were
introducing themselves to the other bands on tour, one being a German
hardcore band called Rykers. The first thing out of the bass player’s
mouth was, “You look like Bruce Willis,” and the name stuck with Harry
for the whole tour, and tours to come. So now we like to torture him by
putting the photo up on our myspace page.
Harry your looking good, Bruce Willis Blues BandTomorrow
and your band is better too.
I’ll have more of the interview with Rebecca.
Till then check out their MySpace page.
