Mike Clark – Talks About Playing With Albert Collins and Son Seals
Posted by A1 Mark under PodcastNo Comments
I had a chance to talk with Mike Clark recently.
Q: Do you also do the singing? I’d think that be hard and play
saxophonist and sing.
Mike: Yes I sing the tunes. The saxes are over dubbed with me playing all of
them. When a gig pays enough I hire horn players to cover the parts.
Otherwise I usually go with a 4 or 5 piece band.Q: How did you get to play with Albert Collins and Son Seals? Could you
tell us something about working with them? (A few weeks ago I did a show
on The Raunchtones. The leader of the band said he started playing the
blues after seeing a Son Seals concert.)
Mike: I just got the call to play the gigs when these guys were in town.
Albert was such a gentleman. We chatted after one of the show for about
an hour. Just him and I. I will never forget that. He died about 6
months after the shows I did with him. Son Seal was in Alberta doing a
couple of shows where I was the horn player. He didn’t say much as we
drove from gig to gig in the other horn players 1965 Plymouth Valiant.
We spent about 12 hours in that old car. Son had just come back from
Turkey where he was used to getting driven in Limos now here he was in
Alberta Canada in the back of an old Valiant. At the shows he ripped it
up. His wife asked if I ‘d wanted to join the band but he got sick
shortly after and sadly passed away.
Q: How is Mikey’s Juke Joint & Eatery doing?
I was looking at the menus and man it really sounds good.
Mike: We are a new place and it’ going great! I wanted a place where musicians
and their music could be really listened to. The food is awesome!Tomorrows post will be the conclusion of the interview with Mike Clark.
