Q: What were some of the bands that inspired you to get into music?
John: In the sixites when I was in elementary school, I was listening to alot of pop/bubble gum stuff. You know, stuff like “Ohio Express”, “1910 Fruitgum Company”, “Herman’s Hermits”, whatever. There was always hope that someone in the family would get the latest “Monkee” album for Christmas. However, I’m going to guess that things took a turn around 1969 when I got a K-tel record for Christmas and heard “Cinnamon Girl” for the first time…WoW! Those crunchy guitar chords and the sweet harmonies between Danny Whitten and Neil Young. That was it for me. I was hooked on rock music. Playing guitar never really entered my mind back then, however. I’m not really certain why, but as far back as I can recall, I wanted to play drums. Once I started to do that, I forgot about the bubble gum/am radio hits and focused on stuff like Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple, Doobie Brothers, C.C.R. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin The Band etc. You’ll be interested to know that I never listened to a lot of Tom Petty. He always did get an enormous amount of radio airplay around here , however. I have two live concert DVD’s that I love and I’ve seen him and the heartbreakers in concert only once. Was a great show.
Q: What do you listen to now?
John: Not much, some kid stole my I-pod with over 6000 songs in it last week…..LOL. Wish I was kidding about that, but, it’s true. Regardless, I like a lot of stuff. I still listen to Grand Funk, just to hear Mark Farner sing. When I was a kid, I was listening to GFR so I could hear Don Brewer play drums. He was my hero back then. Man, I think Farner was the most soulful sounding white rock singer of all time. Having said all of that, I listen to a lot of Blue Oyster Cult’s more recent albums. The one’s people don’t know exist and happen to be some of their best work. Those guys are America’s best kept secret as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been listening to Wide Spread Panic. I love those guys. I love the Bon Scott AC/DC stuff. This week, I’ve been getting up and putting Neil’s “Ordinary People” song on from his latest album, “Chrome Dreams 2″. It’s a great song, and you can start the song, shave, shower, get dressed, and the song is still playing, so you don’t have to mess with what you want to hear next while in a rush to get out the door. : ) I picked up this Donovan Frankenreiter album in a shop in Florida a couple of weeks ago.
I had some great guys in Nashville playing with me on this and my producer, Joe Hardy, he pulled the whole thing together for me. I can’t thank him enough. I was frustrated after trying to get this project done for about 2 years. After I met Joe, it came together quickly. I’m going to need to find a band soon to go out and do these tunes with. Overall, I just want folks to hear it. I love hearing from them, love to hear and read their comments. It’s interesting.Songs played on the podcast were all from John’s new cd “Time”1. Company Town
2. Panic Mechanic
3. Runaway
4. Ginned Up
5. For Me
