Once again Canada is providing us with a superior musical act. This
time it’s Mike Clark and his great blues jazz style.
Mike truly is one of Canada’s premiere blues and roots artists and has
been nominated for a Maple Blues Award in the category of “Horn Player
of the Year” for three consecutive years. He has performed with Albert
Collins, Son Seals, Amos Garrett, The Downchild Bluesband, and Dutch
Mason to name a few. He’s recorded with Johnny V (If My Daddy Could
See Me Now), Donald Ray Johnson (Pure Pleasure), Tim Williams (Live at
Kaos), Ray Montana (Hip October), Steve Pineo (Steve Pineo with Horns)
and can be heard on many other sessions. For the past 15 years Mike
has hosted the popular Saturday afternoon jam at Morgans Pub and now
with two solo recordings under his belt (Saxman and Clarkology) he’s
assembled his own band in order to showcase his songwriting, singing
and arranging prowess.

Laws of Gravity – “Crawl” does anything but crawl, it’s a tuff rocking
song by a band that will be spotlighted on 01-24-08

This edgy rock quartet, formed by Mike Dijan, whose fierce guitar writing with Breakdown, Crown Of Thornz, Skarhead, and a few others, exemplified the raw, pure roots of hardcore at the height of it’s popularity in New York City. He called on fellow hardcore stalwart’s Harry Kazakos on bass (Breakdown), and drummer Ray Greene (Fahrenheit 451, One True Thing) to start a new project. Several jams in the studio laid the groundwork for a batch of great songs, and just needed the right vocals to bring it all together. It was then that Mike met singer/songwriter Rebecca Haviland after her performance at the famed West Village Landmark, the Bitter End. While unexpected and unsure about where the meeting would take them beforehand, the musical cohesiveness was almost instant.

The above was taken from their MySpace page, check it out, this is a band on the move.

SUPERNAL is an exciting and promising young rock band from Toronto.
Imagine the depth of the Smashing Pumpkins with the raw expressive
power of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Throw in the high rock energy of the Foo
Fighters for good measure, and you get the honest innovative force of
Supernal. Singer Angela Elizabeth’s emotionally-charged lyrics and her
explosive delivery of them is the essence of the band’s sound.
Supernal proves as a unique, captivating band that really, honestly -
ROCKS!

Q: How is the new cd going?
Will it be pretty much the same style as the last?
Brent: The new CD is a bit of a new direction. It is higher energy, a
little funkier, a little deeper than before. Expect higher highs and
lower lows. A huge difference is that this will be our debut as an
internationally-released full length vs. an EP, so we will be doing
best to follow suit after OUR favorite full-length CD’s (Ie Siamese
Dream, The Bends, Color and the Shape).
Q: Is there anything I missed, you would like to tell the listeners about.
Brent: Your questions were so thorough I’m not sure that I have a ton
to add. Basically 2008 will have us working harder than we ever have
before! Expect plenty of shows, tons of web updates, new videos and
surprises!!! Maybe even some freshly baked cookies!???

Q: How did your video of “Light It Up” come about?
Which cd or ep is that song on?
Guess your pushing that as the hit?
Brent: Light It Up. I loved the concept for this video…crazy female
fan taking out the band members one by one, the empowered female with
the band dudes as the victims ….we shot it with some
indie-filmmakers from the CBC. What is interesting about it is that
the shoot had 4 locations, One was a Boston Pizza one of us had worked
at, the second was a house I was living out of at the time, the third
was a gay bar on church street, the forth being the alley outside that
gay bar… very random indeed :)
The song is as of yet not available on CD. This was a transitional
period for the band, moving from Calgary to Toronto, So Light It Up
and Glass are songs that were released only online so as to generate
hype with the new Toronto fan base. They will likely be released on
the new album coming very soon this spring! The main single from that
CD will be a new song, but Light It Up was a single of ours over the
past 6 months.

Q: Could you tell us something about a couple of the songs I’ve picked
for the spotlight show. I think people get into songs more if they
know something about the song.
Brent: Angela is usually the better person to ask about songs, but she
is in India right now, so I will make something up haha jk.
COLOR FADES AWAY - is one of the few lyrical collaborations that me
and Angela have….usually it is all her on the lyrics, but she was so
kind as to let me have a lyric or two in this one ;) The idea behind
this song is the homogenizing undertones in modern notions of beauty
and ideal images for what people should look like. Basically the
tragedy of “LA women and men” and the desire to look like a perfect
android vs. being a beautiful individual….this song comes as an
anthem against nose jobs and tummy tucks…
NOT FOR SALE - Instead of a lyrical interpretation of this song (which
I am bad with cause this is all Angela) I will instead give you a
situational backdrop for this one… It has a lot to do with where we
were in Summer 2005 when we were first writing this song. At that
point we were still in Calgary, doing a lot of touring across the
country, which is what would foreshadow our impending move to
Toronto….at this point, having just finished University more or
less, we were all faced with the decision to go buy into the Calgary
oil machine and buy houses and get real jobs, or stick it out and make
a living at that band or die trying……… As I write this message
to you here from my bedroom in Toronto, this story continues as the
songs title would suggest. More of the interview in tomorrows post.

Why is the record industry in so much trouble? New Theory: They have
not looked to Canada which is over flowing with great acts. You
remember The Coggs, next week Mike Clark and today it’s Supernal.
Supernal are:
Angela Elizabeth - Vocals/Guitar
Tony Gare - Guitar
Brent Miller – Bass (and great wit)

Jonny Swank - Drums

Supernal - Live in concert

Supernal - in Concert
I got to interview Brent Miller the bass player and all round witty
guy as you’ll see.
Q: How did you come up with the name Supernal?
Brent: The name Supernal means “something from a higher place”, or
“something celestial”. While we are by no means celestial :) the music
that we love all seems to come from that sense of the unknown
fantastic. It’s that sense of incredible mystery that is attached with
music that excites us and makes us want to create new albums!
Therefore to us……Supernal = Crazy Sexy Cool
Q: How would you describe your band?
Brent: We like to describe ourselves as the depth of the Smashing
Pumpkins, the high energy of the Foo Fighters and the dance
captivation of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. But only their good albums :)
jk… our main underlying focus is writing great songs…we try really
hard not to pigeon-hole ourselves and let each album speak its own
way… Three things are important in all of it. Excitement, Depth,
Fun!!
